But another reality is that I found this beautiful grey velvet-y Chesterfield sofa at Macy's more than six months ago, fell in love, and have never gotten over it. The darn thing went on sale earlier this month, so by George, I went for it.
And then freaked. The heck. Out.
You see, I remembered this story I read in some book when I was a kid (but couldn't for the life of me tell you what it was, so readers, if this sounds familiar, feel free to enlighten me) about a girl whose father bought her a new bookshelf or something for her room. Once she had whatever this thing was, it made the rug look shabby, so she, of course, required a new rug. Then, with the new rug and the original new thing (gosh, I have a terrible memory), the curtains looked shabby, and so on and so on.

The couch is grey. The rug in my living is in beige tones to go with the existing couch. So with the new couch, I'll probably need a new rug.
The couch has tufts. So does the green silk ottoman I'm using as a coffee table. Too much matchy-matchy tuft action. So with the new couch, I'll probably need an actual coffee table.
The couch is larger than my current couch. So the whole living room will need to be rearranged so I can pull the piano bench out to sit on it.
And so on and so on.

Also, I bought some end tables, because, naturally, the ones I have just won't do. But they are grey, and must therefore be painted so there's not too much grey in the room.
