I almost titled this post "Fall Decorating for the Busy/Lazy/Inept," because I am all three of those things. I never have been a person who decorates for different seasons for that reason, but I love the warmth and festiveness of seasonal decor. So I decided to go to Michael's one afternoon to see what I could find that wouldn't take a lot of time or effort or skill. Because again, I have not a single one of those three things.
So here's a summary of what I came up with, and I'm sharing in case it might help someone else overcome an aversion to adding seasonal touches to their home. And also because all the fall decor at Michael's is something like 80% off right now, so go for it.
I realize it's pretty late in the season, but we still have some time before Christmas, so why not embrace what little of autumn we have left?
More after the jump...
1. Gold gourds and squashes in a jar
I didn't say all these ideas made sense. Who stores gourds and squashes in a jar anyway? But whatever, they look pretty and I love it. I bought a bag of small fake gourds and squashes for a whole $3.99, spray painted all of them gold, tossed them in this jar, and tied a ribbon around it. You can also just place the gold gourds strategically throughout your living space, or on your Thanksgiving table. Boom. Decoration.
2. Garland and ribbon on the fireplace
I bought this beautiful beaded garland at full price, which hurt (it wasn't that expensive, but the principle, you know?), but I realized that it would double as Christmas decor, so that made me feel better about it.
The garland has loops at the end, and since it didn't quite extend the full length of my fireplace, I threaded some metallic brown ribbon through the loops to extend its length, and tied some bows. I then twirled the same ribbon around the length of the garland and let the ends hang down. I used some 3M Command hooks to hold the whole shebang up.
Just switch out the ribbon to something more Christmas-y the day after Thanksgiving, and you're already ahead of the game. WINNING!
3. Branches in a jug
This is exactly what it sounds like. I have this amazing giant oak tree in my backyard that casts off branches far and wide (which I'm sure my neighbors just love). I found a few in my front yard, broke them down, and arranged them in this beautiful vintage jug on my fireplace. It adds a nice rustic touch to balance out all the gilt and glitter I've got up there right now.
4. Beads in a vase
I have this beautiful Victorian (reproduction) flat metal vase that I received as a birthday gift last year. This type of vase has a name, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it is. Anyway, I filled it with a number of beaded branches that I picked up with zero idea of what I was going to do with them. Easy. You could probably tie a ribbon around it, but I didn't.
5. Easy wreath
I wrapped a garland around a grapevine wreath, tucked the ends into the branches, tied a ribbon around where the ends meet, and hung it on my front door. Easiest thing ever. Please excuse my "no solicitors" sign. It's extremely necessary.
I hope these ideas inspire you, readers. I can't stress enough how little skill or time they require.
