High Five!

HIGH FIVE
–noun
a gesture of greeting, good-fellowship, or triumph in which one person slaps the upraised palm of the hand against that of another.

I don't know when or how it happened, but I've become someone who gives high fives. Historically, I always the receiver of this greeting. However, I'd usually either miss the high five coming my way or I'd just stare blankly at the person with their hand raised. Let's face it: high fives have always made me a little nervous. If I actually managed to successfully receive the person's hand coming toward mine, it resulted in more of a pressing-and-sliding of palms than an actual collision/slap.

But lately, for no apparent reason, I've been initiating high fives. It's almost as if it happens against my will, usually taking people by surprise. I tried to high five one of my girlfriends recently and received only an open-mouthed stare. It was a well-deserved reaction.

I have a few theories as to why this phenomenon is taking place.

1. I have lost my mind
2. I have become marginally less uptight
3. I spend a lot of time with people who regularly administer high fives and I'm just adapting to the social norm.

It is most likely a combination of all three theories. It's not a bad problem to have, it just takes some getting used to. So don't be surprised if you see an upraised palm coming your way. Just be prepared.

  2. I say it's because it's faster than a handshake or hug and therefore you have less of a chance of catching the swine flu. Right?
