Noise

I have finally moved into my new/old house, and after 48 hours of living here, I'm beginning to learn its noises.  Living alone for the first time ever, it's been a priority for me to figure out which noises belong to the house, so that I can respond if I hear something that doesn't belong - like a break-in.

So far, I know that the knocking sound that I hear after a shower is the hot water heater working away in the laundry room.  The creak outside is the wind caught in the screen door. The bang in the bathroom after the toilet is flushed is totally normal. The neighbors' cars are starting to sound familiar.

Perhaps my favorite sound is the constant chorus of birdsong in the backyard.  Their song lulls me to sleep, heralds the morning, welcomes me home.  Like Snow White or Cinderella, I'm just waiting for the little birds to bring me my robe and my coffee in the morning.

All the sounds work together in harmony, singing home, home, home.  It's a beautiful song, and one I hope to hear for a long, long time.
